Ancud, Chepu, Puñihuil
penguins.
Chiloé
is an archipelago
located 80
km
southwest of Puerto
Montt, separated
from the mainland by
the Chacao Channel.
Visiting Chiloe becomes a must for a travel
iteinerary. Not only are they beautiful islands, but
they are also known for
traditions
and mystical legends that are
completely unique
in all of Chile.
Once on Chiloe, we will visit Ancud,
a city characterized by its
war forts. These forts are
heritage from the Spanish conquest, and served as a
defense against the Dutch and English pirates who
attacked the area continuously during the colonial
era. We will take a
tour of the city
and visit a
museum that boasts
such attractions as
a scale replica
of the schooner
Ancud and
a skeleton of a whale
stranded
on the shores of the
Pacific, in addition to gathering all the
traditional and cultural relics of Chiloé.
Following the
tour, we
will arrive at Chepu; a
town that
sits on the banks of
Chepu River and
the Pacific Ocean.
There we
will enjoy a typical Chiloe
lunch: curanto.
Curanto is a dish of shellfish and meat wrapped in
leaves and baked in a hole in the ground. It makes
for a delicious meal, however other meals are
provided if this does not sound to be your
preference. While eating, we can enjoy
the excellent view of the
Chiloé
National Park and the open
sea.
We will continue to Puñihuil
Penguin, unique to the world for the mixed
reproductive process of the Magellanic Penguin and
Humboldt Penguin. Visit to the islands where these
species nest every year must be done via boat. This
location is perfect for photographing the various
typical birds.
